What is Classified Ad ?

Classified ads are a very common offline advertising method. That’s not to say they are not popular online; in fact, Craigslist is one of the most trafficked websites on the planet, regularly attracting thousands of visitors per day from all over the globe. A classified ad consists of a few lines of text with either a telephone number, email address or a link to a website at the bottom. Sometimes, online classified sites allow users to attach images to their ads. Users are also given the option of utilizing bold fonts and colors and bullet points to ‘dress up’ their ad and make it stand out from the sea of classified ads on display. However, this particular feature is generally reserved for those that are willing to pay a higher price to publish their ad.

What is Click Fraud ?

Click fraud takes place when clicks or page impressions are artificially and/or maliciously inflated using devious means and methods. A malicious click fraud can be performed by a publisher or an advertiser. In both instances, either a human being or a robot (also known as a bot) is involved in intentionally clicking on ads and causing the click through rate to skyrocket. A publisher (especially an Adsense publisher) would do this to artificially increase their earnings. Not only is this practice illegal, it is also very risky as Google comes down hard on these people and immediately bans their Adsense accounts. An advertiser on the other hand, would do this to their competitors who have purchased profitable keywords on a cost-per-click basis, in order to drain them of their budget, which in turn decreases their advertising power.

What is Click Through Rate ?

Sometimes just ‘click rate’ or CTR, click rate refers to the ratio of the number of times a visitor clicks on an ad, per number of users that land on the web page containing the ad. A useful formula for figuring this out is as follows –> ad clicks : ad impression x 100% = click rate. For instance, if just one out of 100 visitors that arrive at a website click on an ad and are taken to the destination page, then the click rate of that advertisement would be 1% or (1/100). The standard click rate when selling digital goods online is 1% (although depending on the sales copy written for the copy, it can rise to 5% and in some instances, even 30% – 80%), while for banner ads, it is around 0.15%.

What is Content ?

Content simply refers to the material on your site, such as text, images, etc.

They say that ‘content is king,’ because ultimately, the quality of the content you publish on your website determines if it is a success or a failure. If the content on your site is not unique and is poorly written and structured, not only will it put off visitors and prompt them to click away, your rankings in the search engines will also dip. Hence, producing top notch content is of paramount importance. One way to do this would be to write it up yourself. However, if you don’t really fancy sitting down and putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard!), you can easily outsource it to a competent ghostwriter. The end goal should be to provide superior quality content that satisfies both human beings as well as search engine robots.

What is Content Spinner ?

First off, let’s define spinning. This is usually a technique that you apply to content (eg: an article) in order to create multiple versions that are seen as unique in the eyes of the search engines. Doing it manually by hand is time consuming and tedious at best, which is why content spinners (easy to use software) have been produced to help marketers speed up the task. A popular example of a content spinner would be The Best Spinner. Article spinning can range from black hat where you generate complete rubbish (doing this can get you penalized by Google though) to white hat where each and every piece of content you generate is unique and valuable.

What is ContentLink ?

ContentLink™ is part of Kontera’s (a reputed advertising program that’s quite similar to Adsense) in-text advertising platform. For a webmaster, it provides an opportunity to generate another stream of income by including ads that match the content on his site. Here’s how it works – The publisher inserts the Kontera ad-code he’s supplied with in the source code of his web page. The code automatically detects the keywords in the content that are relevant to the advertisments contained in Kontera’s database. Once the keywords and ads are identified, each keyword is then transformed into a ContentLink™ with a double underline and an eye-catching font color, so it attracts the attention of visitors to the page. When a visitor clicks on a ContentLink™, the webmaster gets credited for the click (earns revenue) and the user is instantly taken to the advertiser’s landing page/website.

What is Contextual Advertising ?

A contextual advertising system automatically scans a web page for keywords and serves up targeted and relevant ads based on the content on that page. For example, if the website publishes content about dog grooming, visitors to the site would see ads related to this topic such as dog grooming tips, dog grooming supplies and dog food manufacturers. This form of advertising is also utilized by search engines to display targeted ads on their search results pages based on the keyword phrases typed in by users. The best known contextual advertising platform out there is Google’s Adsense program. Kontera and Chitika are also popular amongst internet marketers.
