One of the most important elements of marketing is your mailing list. In fact, it’s probably your single, most valuable asset.

What you do with your lists, how you communicate to your public, what you say, what you promote, what words you use in your emails to your customers, all these things make a huge difference in the success of your online business. So how to do you figure out what to say in your emails, what’s effective and what isn’t? TESTING, that’s how.

So in this week’s live show I decided to give a live demonstration of how Aweber works as a split-testing tool. For those who don’t know, Aweber is an email/autoresponder service. One of the great features of Aweber is a testing tool, where you can test variations of an email and determine which communicates best to your own public.

We often have the urge during traditionally “tough” economic times like holidays, to go into agreement with them, and blame those holidays or seasons for drops in our sales, low income, etc. What times are “tough” depend on what business you’re in. We say “Things are always slow this time of year” or “It’s the economy” or “It’s the holidays”. But saying those things doesn’t improve the situation, it just justifies low production.

Instead what you SHOULD be doing is not agreeing with it. Do the exact opposite of what your urge is. Promote MORE. Make MORE phone calls, get out MORE promotional materials, MORE direct mail, see MORE customers.

The solution to any low production time is to promote and market your way out of it, even if it DOES mean spending a little bit of money to do so. It will be worth it.

Online marketing is not something you can succeed at by trying one thing one day and then dropping it because you don’t make a million dollars in a week. That strategy doesn’t work in ANY career. If you want to be a doctor or a chef or a plumber or WHATEVER, first you decide. Then you study, you practice, you study more, you practice more. You become competent through study and practice. That is always how it’s done, and this field is no different.

The key is PERSISTENCE. Noone has ever become a professional at anything without persistence. It is the one thing that separates the successful from the unsuccessful.

In last week’s live show I went over this exact point. So here’s the clip for those of you just starting, or those of you on the verge of giving up, or those of you who’ve been at it for years and want a little reminder of why you persist. And for anyone else who just feels like watching. Cheers!

Visa, Mastercard and the Federal Trade Commission are working out a new series of regulations to protect consumers and businesses from fraudulent online business transactions. To date, there are already hundreds of internet businesses which have lost their merchant accounts in the past couple weeks.

There are always pros and cons in making regulations for a few which affect the many, and this situation is no different.

On the plus side, internet consumers will be protected from unethical internet business practices such as “Negative option billing“. Additionally, Visa and Mastercard will be knocking out all activities which are damaging to their reputation. We, as consumers AND business owners, count on Visa and Mastercard all the time. And we need to be able to count on them.

On the minus side, their regulations COULD affect businesses which do NOT engage in unethical activities, but which contain some of the criteria/characteristics which are similar to those of the scammers. For example, many membership sites offer free introductory services before you start getting billed monthly. It’s so common, it’s basically how it’s always done. But the shady businesses do this too. So if the new rules cancel this activity, millions of completely ethical businesses will not be able to do business.

It’s impossible to say exactly how this is going to play out, but one thing is for SURE: If you use negative option billing, you better make it REALLY obvious to the customer that that’s what you’re doing, so there is NO MISTAKE, and NO chance that your customer doesn’t know. And if you’re an unethical business intentionally withholding your activities from your customers…well, you’ll be gone soon. But it’s never too late to make a new start and try running a legitimate business and actually being good to your customers.

Think about it, when you’re looking for restaurants, doctors, car repair shops or any of thousands of businesses you’ll need to actually visit, what do YOU put in the search field? Chances are you enter your own town into the search so that you don’t just get a list of places all over the world, right? Right. As a business owner, it’s vital that your company is represented online so that it actually shows up in these searches.

Businesses have been using the internet for international, national and local online marketing for many years now. But there are still a lot of local businesses that don’t use it, despite that nearly 80% of this country is connected to the internet daily. The internet is happening now and it’s the future of marketing and advertising…specifically LOCAL marketing.

There are sites that review businesses as well. Yelp is one of the most popular social networking websites on the internet. Consumers go there to find out about local businesses, where they are located and how they are reviewed by the other members of the site. And members post their own reviews after visiting local businesses. People make decisions based on Yelp results. Last July, Yelp had 8.6 million new visitors, which was an increase of about 80% over the previous year. So if you have any doubts as to whether local online marketing is just a fly-by-night gig, you need to dispel them.

The internet is here to stay. And local online marketing of your business is more important than ever. Make this the year you give your company a real online presence in your local area. And watch the results.

The first and most important step in making money with Adsense is RESEARCH.  You have to find out what’s happening in your industry.  Some markets have bigger payouts for Adsense than others.  So it’s important to assess the current scene in your particular business.  You may find you have to make changes in your website so that it more closely aligns with current trends.  Or you may find you want to scrap the whole subject entirely.  It really depends on what comes up in your research.

What tools should you use in doing your Adsense research?  Bill Mcintosh suggests three:

1.Google search

2.Keyword Country, and

3.Market Samurai.
